Overview
The Birth of a Nation is at once one of the most revered and most reviled films in cinema history. As every film studies scholar knows, this complex legacy makes The Birth of a Nation difficult to teach, and as a result the film is often excluded from classroom syllabi despite its considerable significance in American and cinematic history.
Griffith in Context specifically addresses these issues, using an innovative multimedia format to provide the cultural and historical context necessary for students to approach The Birth of a Nation critically and productively. Among the resources provided by this innovative learning tool are nine remastered digital clips from the film; over one hundred audio commentaries by scholars of film, literature, history, and race; hundreds of still images that correspond to the audio commentaries; and abundant textual resources, including contemporary reactions to the film in the African American press and selections from Thomas Dixon’s related novels The Leopard Spots and The Clansmen.
Package Griffith in Context with either Looking at Movies or A History of Narrative Film for 25 percent off its stand-alone price.
