In the Classical era, two types of Italian opera prevailed: opera buffa (comic opera) and opera seria (serious opera).
The Marriage of Figaro is one of Mozart's most popular comic operas; it is based on a controversial play by Beaumarchais.
In The Marriage of Figaro, the aristocracy is satirized, and the servants (Figaro, Susannah, and Cherubino) outsmart the nobility (the Count).
In opera, each aria allows for emotional expression, while the recitative moves the action forward.
