  1. The 54-chapter structure of Ihara Saikaku's first novel, The Life of a Sensuous Man, parodies Murasaki Shikibu's the Tale of the Genji, covered in "The Golden Age of Japanese Culture" (see pages 2182–2270 in volume B).
  2. As with Petronius, whose Satyricon is covered in "The Roman Empire" (see pages 1183–1199 in volume A), Ihara Saikaku wrote fiction that is closer to caricature than to realism.
  3. Ueda Akinari was well versed in The Man'yoshu and the Tale of the Heike, covered in "The Golden Age of Japanese Culture" (see pages 2148–2160 and 2300–2326, respectively, in volume B).
