- Like the Odyssey and the Mahabharata,
the Popol Vuh is considered a "national"
masterpiece that serves to bind the people of a nation together
(see pages 225530 and pages
9531001 in volume A).
- It has been suggested that Christian missionary influence
can be detected in the stories of the creation of the universe
in the Popol Vuh. Stories from the biblical tale
of Genesis appear to have been assimilated into the Maya
pantheon and in the telling of the Earth's creation
(see pages 5277 in volume
A).
