1. What is your response to the different characters in this story, especially the grandmother? How much of the family interaction and the plot action is she responsible for? Do you feel sympathy for her?

2. Are you shocked by the ending? At what point did you see a change of tone and foreshadowing of the violent end?

3. How important is the southern setting for understanding the characters and their motivations? How much are the grandmother's pretensions of "being a lady" and her attachment to the past keys to the action?

4. Would you consider this a "dark comedy"? Did you laugh at any points? Do you find the family's interactions realistic or funny?
