Reading Questions

1. What is Bertha's relationship with her husband? Are her feelings about her husband different from her feelings about Pearl Fulton?

2. Look carefully at the first two paragraphs of the story. Do you feel that these opening lines gave you a good description of what it means to be blissful? After reading the story, what does the word "bliss" mean to you? Is it an emotional or a physical feeling? Did you recognize any of Bertha's feelings as ones that you have had?

3. Are there any hints or foreshadowing that Bertha's life may not be as happy as it seems on the surface?

4. Did you like Bertha's dinner guests? Generally, what kinds of people are they?

What do their characteristics say about Bertha's interests and relationships?

5. Were you surprised by the ending? Are there clues early on in the story that foreshadow the ending? Bertha says, "Oh, what is going to happen now?" If you could extend the conclusion of the story, what would you have happen next?
