1. Who is telling the story? In what kind of community does it take place? When does the story take place? What is the mood at the beginning of the story?
2. What words would you use to describe each of these characters: Mrs. Hale, Mrs. Peters, and the county attorney? What differences do you see in the behaviors and personalities of these characters?
3. To convict a person of murder, the county attorney must establish motive, means, and opportunity. What are the means and opportunity that he discovers during his investigation?
4. What are the clues the women discover that establish motive?
5. What is the connection between the way Mr. Wright died and the way the songbird died?
6. Why do the women hide the evidence? What would you have done?
