Sourcebook of Scandinavian Furniture: Designs for the 21st Century

Judith Gura

"Carter Wiseman has accomplished a difficult task....Wiseman is admirably dogged when it comes to facts; his text clears up many mysteries. But he is equally adept at presenting the somewhat tatty glamour of Kahn's life and the poetry of his oeuvre....Gura's text includes an excellent overview of the factors contributing to the rise of the style, with plenty of context in which to appreciate how Scandinavian furniture defined a past era, and how it will likely define the future. The illustrations, spanning decades of design, show every conceivable sort of furniture from a plethora of designers and manufacturers, with designers, dates and current availability noted for each."

 - Modernism Magazine

The five countries known collectively as Scandinavia have been the source of some of the most important furniture designs of the twentieth century. Today, a new generation of designers continues that tradition, creating pieces that are functional, comfortable, and visually appealing. This book, the first American summary of modern Scandinavian design in more than two decades, updates the history of design in the Nordic nations, and illustrates more than 500 of the best current furniture from over 70 producers, most of them in full color. It also includes detailed product specifications and sources, biographies of important Nordic designers, and a comprehensive bibliography. It will appeal to everyone with an interest in modern furniture, as well as designers, architects, collectors, and students with a special interest in Scandinavian design.
